San Francisco, 1936. On a day when Willa MacCarthy is supposed to be meeting with her parish priest about taking her vows as a nun (something she does not want, but her Irish-Catholic family insists on), her brother Paddy slices off parts of two of his fingers while working at the family pub. Willa, who secretly reads medical books in her free time, knows enough to create a tourniquet and take Paddy to their family doctor. When she gets him there though, she learns the old Doctor has retired and a new Doctor, a woman, has taken over his practice.  The Doctor, Katherine Winston, stitched Paddy up while Willa watches in awe. Noticing her interest in medicine, Dr. Winston offers Will a job, as she needs a nurse. Willa declines though, knowing her family would pitch a fit. However, Paddy talks her into doing the job, and promises to help her cover it up from her parents. They end up telling Willia's parents that she and Paddy will be helping a few times a week at a soup kitchen.  On he

The book begins with a prologue from David's POV. He is in Mississippi and is now having near constant headaches. He gets visions all the time and his eyes are permanently golden and glowing. He eats very little and sleeps even less. Worst of all, his visions are all blurry and disjointed, and when they come on him, it seems he unwillingly turns any young woman who happens to be near him into a Paladin. Meanwhile, Harper has been working as a lifeguard with Bee and bored out of her mind until one day she is attacked in the pool locker room by a girl claiming to be another Paladin. She tells Harper she is there to kill her because it's what David wants. While fighting, Harper feels herself losing all her strength, and only narrowly avoids death thanks to Bee finding her in time.  In a desperate attempt to find David, Harper gets Bee and Ryan to attempt a summoning ritual at the ruins of the old Ephor house. The spell doesn't seem to work, except that night they all have dre

Several months have passed since Cotillion and Harper is working with Ryan and David to help figure our David's powers without getting him killed or making him crazy. The friends have decided to try dampening David's visions (without his knowledge) because the visions are so painful for him. This seems to work until one night when David has an extremely powerful vision that leads him to the headquarters of the Ephors (the people tasked with overseeing the Oracle and who up until recently wanted to kill David), a home which up until weeks ago had been a burned out wreck. At the house they meet Alexander, one of the Ephors who reveals to Harper that she is not technically a paladin yet. Alexander informs Harper she must go through a series of trials called the Peirasmos, and if she doesn't do them, then the Ephors will simply keep coming after her and Ryan until they are both dead and they can make a new mage and paladin. Also, she doesn't actually have a choice in wheth

Elatsoe is a 17-year old Lipan Apache girl living in Texas. She, like her ancestor "Six-Great" (her six-times great-grandmother), has the ability to conjure ghosts from the underworld, including her faithful dog Kirby who remains her companion after his death. One night, Elatsoe gets a feeling that something bad is about to happen and assumes something is wrong with her parents, who are out on a movie date. She decides to ride her bike to the movie theater, and on the way, she spots her friend Jay attempting to climb an old bridge. Jay and his girlfriend have just broken up and he wants to cross out the heart he had previously spray painted with their initials on it. Elatsoe talks him down and finds her parents at the movies, who tell her everything is fine. However, later that night, Elatsoe's cousin comes to her in a dream and tells he he has been murdered by a man named Dr. Abe Allerton in a town called Willowbee. In the morning, Elatsoe learns that indeed her cousin
